British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of approach shafts leading to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces involved in this strike for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of numerous British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, after an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
